Berkeley
Berkeley is a city proud of its architecture, and it is often a hotbed of controversy over preserving the past in favor of pressing into the future. Landmarks abound, from private homes, churches, and stores designed by Julia Morgan and Bernard Maybeck in the early part of the century, to ivy-covered historic buildings on the University of California campus. There are no malls or shopping centers in the modern sense of the word. Instead, Berkeley boasts numerous neighborhood commercial districts with unique architecture built on a human scale. The Berkeley Historical Society leads frequent walking tours of neighborhoods to point out architectural delights and their history.
